Season 2

"Right as Raynes" is the eighth episode of the first season of Eureka.

Synopsis[]

A computer programmer who left Eureka after having a falling out with Stark returns at the same time that the town is hit by a computer virus. He stirs up a lot of unfinished business in Jo's life.

Plot[]

At SARAH's, Sheriff Carter and Zoe are getting ready to leave the house, bickering about Zoe's dyed hair and therapy. Meanwhile, a mysterious man is seen walking on the street to Eureka. Arriving in Eureka, he presses the button of the traffic light before crossing the street and eventually approaches Café Diem. Vincent recognizes the man, calling him Callister, and is very shocked to see him. He asks Callister if he has seen Jo, and assures him neither he nor Jo ever thought Callister was guilty. Meanwhile Fargo tries to surreptitiously take pictures of Callister before disappearing. Vincent asks Callister if Stark knows he's back, and Callister throws a look Fargo's empty seat before commenting that he soon will.

Later, Carter is directing the traffic because the traffic lights are broken. Henry, who is fixing it, tells him it is some kind of glitch. Afterwards Carter goes with Allison for a coffee to Cafe Diem. There it is freezing. Vincent tells them his systems are broken and has Christmas music on to go with the temperature. Allison is very shocked to see Callister, telling Carter he used to be Stark's assistant. After a fight Nathan’s lab burned down and Callister was the main suspect. Since then no one has seen him. Then Jo comes in, first kissing Callister for coming back, then punching him for leaving in the first place.

Fargo tells Stark that Callister is back, prompting him to interrupt an important video conference and leave immediately. He and Callister meet at an off-site, abandoned lab. Nathan tells him it's too dangerous for him to be in Eureka, but Callister retorts he had to come back because something is very wrong. He shows Stark something, which worries him greatly. He tells Callister he'll take care of it, and orders him to stay where he is, but Callister protests.

Later, there is another glitch at a farm, and Carter asks Henry for help, suspecting foul play. Henry tells him Eureka has a virus, and that someone with knowledge of Eureka's systems has to be responsible. Carter suspects Callister, who was a programmer.

When Allison asks Nathan about Callister, he pretends to be clueless, and barely reacts when she tells him about the virus, merely assuring her he'll take care of it. At the Sheriff's station, Carter and Jo argue about Callister. Jo reluctantly looks up Callister, but finds someone has erased his records. They are interrupted by a fax, which causes Carter to storm away. Meanwhile, Callister has disobeyed Stark and went to Beverly's for a room, where he meets Zoe who's there for therapy. Just then, Carter comes by and yells at Zoe as he has found out about the identity theft and credit card fraud she committed. After the fight Zoe is heart-broken and believes Carter will send her back to LA.

Stark gets something from his office before returning to the lab, finding it empty. He rushes to Beverly to get Callister. Somehow fire breaks out in Callister's room. As Stark is dragging Callister out, Callister tells Beverly he never meant for this to happen before Stark puts him in his car and they drive off.

Carter and Allison get Fargo to tell them where Stark is and go to the lab, where it is revealed that Callister is an A.I. Stark created. In order to protect him, Stark sent him away. But now he is malfunctioning, and inadvertently infected Eureka's systems with the virus. As Stark is explaining everything, Callister drives off, not wanting to wait for Stark to send him away again. On the street, he meets Zoe who is doing the same thing, and they leave together.

However, Callister is getting weaker and weaker. Carter and Stark finally find them at a bus station, but Callister is close to shutting down. As Carter and Zoe reconcile, Stark stays with Callister in his last moments until he dies.

Memorable Quotes[]

Carter: This is obstruction of justice.
Zoe: How do you figure?
Carter: You're making me late for work.
Jo: (Kisses Raynes) That's for coming back... (punches him) and that's for leaving.
Jo: [on radio] S2 to S1. Repeat S2 to S1, over.
Carter: Jo, it's just you and me you can feel free to be a little less formal. [Radio silence] Over.
Jo: There's an electrical problem at Osbourne's farm on the way into town, over.
Carter: See was that so hard?
Callister Raynes: You didn't say over.
Carter: I know, it's gonna bug her all day long.
Zoe: (about seeing Beverly) Actually, my dad's making me go here. Apparently, I have "issues" with "authority" and "listening" and... I don't know, other stuff. I wasn't really paying attention, so...
Allison: You okay?
Jo: It's just my luck, right? All the good ones are either gay, married, or robots.
Henry: Well, there's your problem. That's what's been messing up everything on the internet.
Allison: Is this our glitch?
Henry: Glitch? No. That's a virus.
Carter: You guys should have switched to Macs.

Notes[]

  • When Callister is dying, Stark reminds him of what Alan Touring said about God giving a computer a soul if he wanted to. Alan Touring was a founding father of artificial intelligence and of modern cognitive science. His examples of ways to test for artificial intelligence were what was used to create the "Turing test". It is the main basis used even today to distinguish if something is a valid AI.
