Season 2

"Purple Haze" is the tenth episode of the first season of Eureka and the one that indulges in the most frequent drug references. The title itself is a reference to the LSD that inspired Jimi Hendrix.

Synopsis[]

The town's residents start acting out of character, and perhaps more in line with their subconscious impulses. Sheriff Carter and Zoe are the only ones unaffected. The father and daughter team search for the cause.

Plot[]

Henry is hard at work building the world's most secure cell phone and wireless tower in Eureka when Jack passes him by, over a dispute with his neighbor Seth, who is loudly playing "Flight of the Valkyrie" over the speakers in his field. Despite Jack's threats, Seth starts up his music again later that night, causing Fargo to go into commando mode. He destroys the cable leading to Seth's speaker, but as he's escaping both he and Seth suddenly pass out in the field. In fact, people all across town are suddenly dropping where they stand.

In the morning, everyone in town is acting unlike themselves. Among others, Allison is spaced out, Henry is an impatient jerk and Jo is overly cheery. Everyone, with the exception of Jack, seems to be acting completely opposite of how they typically act. Jack picks up Fargo in Global Dynamics and locks him in a cell in the police station for vandalizing Seth's property. Seth, on the other hand, is also brought in by Jo for trying to burn down Fargo's house. With everyone acting strangely, Jack looks for Allison to help him sort out the craziness in Eureka. She, however, tries to seduce him. With that option out, he goes to Henry, who's still a jerk. With no one to help him, Jack calls Zoe and asks her to go home and stay there.

Outside of the cell tower, Jack finds Taggart and asks him if he wants to help take it down. So, Taggart takes a giant buzz saw to the tower. Meanwhile, in the station, everyone is getting locked up. Jack tries to get confirmation from Henry, but he tells Jack that the tower wasn't online, so it clearly couldn't be the cause. Jack goes to Beverly's house where she's airing all of Eureka's secrets. Jack stops her, but Allison bursts through the door and attacks Beverly. She takes Jack's gun while he's trying to restrain Beverly, but Jack regains control and handcuffs them to the doors in Beverly's house.

Jack returns to main street where there's pandemonium. He goes back to home where he finds Zoe is fine. SARAH tells Jack that they're in a hermetically sealed environment and that the breathable air is filtered from the outside world. The house also explains that there was a major exotic pollen spike. Jack leaves and goes to Seth's farm to find the plant that may have caused the problem. He tries to set the genetic hybrid that Seth planted on fire but is hit over the head by Taggart with a shovel. He comes to quickly and manages to threaten Taggart with his flamethrower so that he can destroy the plants.

The next morning, the effects are starting to wear off, and have already caused Beverly and Allison to come down. They realize that Nathan hasn't been seen in a while and find him trying to get into the artifact's storage chamber in Section 5. Allison risks her life trying to stop Nathan from opening the vault and exposing himself to the radiation. She manages to talk him down and reinstate the failsafe before he kills himself.

In the weekly town meeting, Jack gives a speech to quell the masses by saying that everyone said or did something that they're ashamed of, so people should forgive and forget. Henry also takes the time to announce that he's leaving Eureka.

Memorable Quotes[]

Zoe: Considering everyone at school's gone schizo? Kids in fights, making out in the hallways, teachers apathetic.
Carter: So, more like normal school, then.
Zoe: Exactly.
Carter: So, what makes us different?
Zoe: We're from LA?
Carter: Well, that definitely sets us apart.
Fargo: I'm sure you did a great job in the last town you worked in-
Carter: America, Fargo. I was a US Marshal. America was my last town.
Stark: Wake me when it's over.
Allison: Reminds me of the last time we slept together.
Carter: Ooh!
[Allison is trying to seduce Carter]
Carter: I can't.
Allison: [glances down, amused] Really? [looks down again]
Carter: Oh, no, I mean, I can! I'm fully capable.
Alison: Don't the two of you ever get tired of bickering?
Carter/Stark: Not really
Carter: [armed with a flamethrower] Unless you want me to roast your chestnuts, back off!
Taggart: [naked and armed with a shovel] You wouldn't dare.
Carter: Try me.
[Taggart drops his shovel and runs off screaming]
Allison: All I know is that there is something inside Section 5, something Nathan's obsessed with. Something that he thinks will change the world.
Carter: Of course, it's incredibly dangerous.
Allison: Have you ever known anything to change the world that wasn't?
Carter: Velcro.

Title[]

Seemingly taken from the Jimi Hendrix song.
