Cure for the Common Cold

Purpose

To remove the symptoms and effects the common cold.

History

Invented several years ago, the cure for the common cold was deemed too expensive to mass produce, although it appears to be readily available in Eureka. There are, as of Sight Unseen, several boxes in Eureka's pharmacy. It is described as an "Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1 Receptor Blocker+." The active ingredients are "Acetamenophen Doxylamine Succinate Phenylephrine Angustifolia Rhizome." With the exception of the last two, these are the same active ingredients as those in Nyquil™ Sinus. Listed, the active ingredients are Acetamenophen, an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) which is used as a mild pain reliever and fever reducer in place of Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid); Doxylamine Succinate, which is a common antihistamine with hypnotic effects; and Phenylephrine, which is a nasal decongestant. The second to last active ingredient, Angustifolia, is commonly referred to as the plant lavender. The last active ingredient, Rhizome, refers to a horizontal plant stem with shoots above and roots below serving as a reproductive structure, such as the edible portion of the ginger plant. Despite these listed active ingredients, the label states that each capsule contains 200 mg of "A Natural Extract of Unique Polysaccharides... Isolated from Panax Quinquefolius," which is commonly referred to as American Ginseng. Ginseng is believed by some to possess certain medicinal qualities, especially in relieving stress. This compound, although listed as the active ingredient, does not include any of the main active ingredients listed under the drug name, and those active ingredients do not include the ginseng extract. Pharmacologically, in combination these drugs would (and do, as they include all of the active ingredients in Nyquil™ Sinus) relieve the symptoms of the common cold and influenza, however, there are no antibiotics or other drugs that would in fact cure either of these diseases.
